Apliu Street has long been reputed in Hong Kong as a market of high technological gadgets for very reasonable prices. Many people would subconsciously associate Apliu Street and high technology. The composer utilizes yangqin to depict the nostalgic but high-tech Apliu Street, while other instruments are designed to mimic customers, passers-by, and the surrounding atmosphere. Yangqin and other instruments often imitate and interact with one another. Sometimes they would also fall into antiphonal dialogues to re-enact the bargaining scenes in Apliu Street, so that the audience may re-live the hustle and the unique soundscape via the music.
“Apliu Street and Technology" was composed in 2018, scored as a concertino for yangqin and string quartet. Yangqin soloist Yuen Ka Yi gave its world premiere in “New Concertino Music & Creative Video Presentation : Featuring the Rising Stars" in the same year. The composer is commissioned by the Yao Yueh Chinese Music Association in 2020 to recompose and rearrange the piece for yangqin solo and chamber orchestra. The composer would like to take this opportunity again to express his gratitude towards Mr. Bryan Lai taking up the role of yangqin solo and Yao Yueh Chinese Music Association for the chance of publishing this composition the second time.
