Programme note
‘The Ancient Voice’ is a music series which focuses on the ancient, traditional, ethnic musical instrument and practice. For example, The ‘Ancient Voice No.2’ is written for chromatic harmonica, violin and jaw harp with overtone singing. The ‘Ancient Voice No.5’ is written for Taishōgoto and overtone singing. The technique: scordatura (retuning) could be seen from medieval and baroque compositions.
Sometimes I believe there should be no any boundaries and even specific clarification between ‘composer’ and ‘performer’. Everyone at any time and places could be both music creator and interpreter A good musician should be capable to compose and perform at the same time.
Therefore, I refined the ‘The Ancient Voice No.1’ (written in 2014) and dedicate the piece to a creative violinist: Korn Roongruangchai and see what could we inspire each other during the process of exploring, creating, interpreting and recreating.
