Programme note
As a musician, I always think about the meaning of music. By listening to the same piece of music, audiences always have different feelings and reflections. The piece is named “ling4-ling4-ling4” — three Chinese words with the same pronunciation but different meanings, which have the same effect with music.
“ling4-ling4-ling4” is a piece written for dizi, sheng, guzheng, pipa and erhu. The piece is formed by three variations of the same theme, which includes different moods, however, they are all inter-related and interactive. By acting as a mediator, the composer includes Chinese-Western musical soundscape echoing to the musical body and environment. The piece starts from zero (零), beyond (凌) the limitation of language and words, leading to the intimate conversation between the souls (靈) of the composer, the music, and the audiences.
